A History of Chaffee County Schools, 1860-1986, was researched and organized by the Chaffee County Extension Homemaker Council. The history includes schools in Lake County, which encompassed what is now Chaffee County, prior to 1880. These images are from the Bob Pierce Photo Collection. Bob worked for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad for nearly 48 years as a supervisory agent, stationed at the railroad offices in Salida, Colorado.

Marjorie Large was born and grew up in Denver, Colorado. She served in the Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959 where her job was processing field reconnaissance photographs. These two panoramic photos were donated after Marge's death. The photo of Camp Kearny's 115th Engineer's Train is personal; her grandfather is among the men in the company.

Photographs in this collection are of the town of Granite and surrounding area and date from 1880 to 1900. The Galvin and Bradbury families settled in Granite and worked in the local mines during this time.
These photographs were graciously donated by the Holton family in memory of Patrica Bradbury Holton.

The Salida Oral History Project preserved the history and heritage of Salida through interviews of long-time residents and other knowledgeable people who lived and worked in the area. These are shared stories of their childhood, schooling, family, church, outings, celebrations, friends, hobbies, and events that still live in their memories. The interviews will be kept forever so that others can learn from these true historians’ words.

There is a strong presence of Laghitian descendants in Salida, averaging about 10% of the town's population. This book documents the journey of many Laghitans who emigrated to Salida, Colorado from Lago, Italy from 1885 to 1920.
