61) Avon School

Original Avon School before addition, taken prior to 1915. The horse barn has not been built. Fence surrounding school yard visible. Shows the Eagle River on right with "water spruce" hanging over the river and Johnson Lane (named for homesteader Joe Johnson) that was the road into Bachelor Gulch. The house was built in 1880-90's. It was moved from Keystone mines near Oak Creek in 1944 to the Leonard Horn Ranch. The house was sawed in half to get accross the frozen Colorado River at State Bridge in order to make the move. There is a barbed wire fence in the foreground and a rug airing on the porch rail.

Photo postcard of the McCoy Bridge over Rock Creek.
On verso, by John Ambos: "For many years all traffic between Wolcott and Routt Co. passed over this bridge, including thousands of freight wagons, hundreds of stages and many herds of cattle, traveling in both directions. Hi water and floods took the bridge out on 3 occasions. There has been no bridge across Rock Creek at McCoy since Hiway 131."

Myret Beal's husband, Biz, holding the hand of Jim Powell (son of Maxine King Powell) in Red Cliff. The small log cabin behind the pair is the first cabin built in Red Cliff by Wm. Greiner and G. J. DaLee in 1879. This cabin was later occupied by Jack Elliott in the 1940s.
