Dick Pownall was a Vail resident and a world-class alpinist and technical climber. Pownall was a member of the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition, which was the first successful ascent by an American team.

This 22 December 1982 letter of thanks is addressed to Barbara Mooney. Mayor Rod Slifer acknowledges receipt of the Vintage Vail Quilt as a gift to the Town of Vail and his intent to house it in the Vail Public Library.
