"The Doan ranch was purchased from Mr. Doan by James P. Gates in about 1899. When J. P. Gates and Kate first moved to the Doan place, they lived in the small house to the left until the big house was built. Chet and Ruth Mayer on their 55th wedding anniversary, May 22, 1984. "Chet was one of the first members of the Eagle County Historical Society and a member of the local Cattlemen's Association." -- Eagle Valley Enterprise March 26, 1992
William and Cora Mayer, Chet's parents, ran the Mayer Ranch before Chet inherited it. That area is now the Eagle Ranch subdivision of Eagle, Colorado.
